🍷 bungo stray dogs
Bungo Stray Dogs follows the members of the Armed Detective Agency as they try to protect Yokohama from organizations such as the Port Mafia (Chuuya is in the Port Mafia). The story mainly focuses on the weretiger Atsushi Nakajima, who joins others gifted with supernatural powers to accomplish different tasks including solving mysteries and carrying out missions assigned by the agency. Also pretty much every character is named after literary authors or a reference to some work and every ability is a reference to a connected work for the author-named character who has said ability. For example, Chuuya Nakahara wrote the poem "This Soiled Sorrow" which is where Chuuya's power name comes from (though it is Upon The Tainted Sorrow, as the abilities are references just as often as they are an exact match).🍷 personality & background
personality:+ Loyal. The top of this list of his positive traits is Chuuya's propensity for loyalty. He can be easy or hard to win over depending on how you go about it - he seems to pretty intensely feel debts and the like and is willing to return a good favor with another so he can be easy in that sense, but on the other hand he can get set off if you go about it the wrong way and he'll likely hold a grudge for a while. Once you have his loyalty it's fairly unshakeable. In the past he worked with a group called the "Sheep" and remained loyal to them up until they stabbed him with a poisoned dagger - even after that he took direct action after in order to protect them and was willing to put himself on the line for the guy who stabbed him at a later point.background: Chuuya has no memories prior to the age of seven, when he merged with the "god of calamity" Arahabaki. Up to that point he had been detained in an experimental medical facility as a test subject; upon merging he destroyed the facility and surrounding area and then fled the scene. Picked up by a gang of kids known as the Sheep, Chuuya spent the next eight years as a member of their number and came to be known as the King of Sheep due to being the only ability user in the group and their strongest attacker. When he was fifteen Port Mafia sent members to investigate a situation with the "ghost" of their former boss. By the end of this situation Chuuya was betrayed by the Sheep and had to join the Port Mafia for their sake as well as his own. In the Mafia he was partnered with Osamu Dazai (Neither Of Them Liked That) and was promoted to one of the five executive seats of Port Mafia following the "Dragon Head Incident" where Chuuya and Dazai very dramatically solved a huge issue with mostly a lot of firepower (Chuuya). Eventually Dazai left the mafia and Chuuya ascended to the level of executive and since then the manga plot has been happening.
+ Reliable. In a group made up of eccentrics who will fuck off to fulfill their own desires, Chuuya usually won't do that. The closest he gets is going to taunt Dazai on purpose when the Port Mafia captures him in the future, and then releasing Dazai only because it was in the Mafia's best interests. He generally will follow the orders the top hands down and he does his best to take care of his subordinates and other Mafia members even when they - or whatever he has to do - cause him irritation. He's reliable when he's on task, basically.
+ Reasonable-ish. He can be reasoned with and is willing to hear people out (sometimes, occasionally after fighting). Chuuya additionally won't actually normally do things to anyone uninvolved in whatever he's up to - he doesn't seem to have any particular interest/joy in attacking civilians indiscriminately. He will attack anyone who is involved in Mafia affairs perfectly willingly, but he'll occasionally listen to whatever the Detective Agency has to say if they're the people he's attacking, albeit sometimes reluctantly. Since some BSD characters are just completely unable to be reasoned with, this is notable. His reasonable-ish thing is most likely to disappear around Dazai because Dazai pisses him off, whoops. Also the "ish" comes with "he's not really a great person overall, just comparatively". He has zero issues murdering or committing crime! He's just surrounded by people who are like, weirder about it.
- Temperamental. His temper comes and goes depending on the situation; he's always a bit blunt and prone to solving things with a decisive show of power but he's not totally against starting off casually talking. His temper is notably way worse when he's around Dazai - panels/scenes where he's interacting with Dazai have him far more stressed and irritated than with anyone else in canon - but he's got a temper with other people as well, just...less dramatically? His solution to being sucked into a murder mystery novel (in the future) with like 500 murderers whose cases he had to solve was to just start beating up everyone in the book, which apparently worked as a solution (though the detective who actually solved things got out way faster).
- Ruthless. He's part of the Mafia and he's an executive - he's perfectly willing to kill and commit crime whenever necessary and as a normal part of his job description and Chuuya doesn't mind playing dirty at any point. That said, he does have his limits - he thinks shooting a dead corpse after it's dead is a bit much, for example, and will stop someone doing that.
- Stubborn. Chuuya is physically incapable of backing down from most things, and he tends to throw himself at problems until he figures out how to solve them. He's not good at giving up at anything, which can be good sometimes but he kind of doesn't give up when he should either.
🍷 upon the tainted sorrow
Besides being pretty skilled at hand to hand combat and decent with firearms, Chuuya's main fancy skills involve the following:• UPON THE TAINTED SORROW. Chuuya's special power allows him to manipulate gravity of any object or person he comes into contact with. Once he's touched them, he can control the gravity independently outside of his touch for a bit - this isn't like "I touch you once and can do this whenever" but more "he can touch a bunch of bullets and throw them back" or "he can manipulate a whole bunch of rocks at once to use as footholds". When it comes to defense he tends to use it to stop bullets a lot or to help him dodge by adjusting his own gravity - he actually manipulates himself more than anyone else, going light to do sky acrobatics and going heavy to hit harder. He can also walk on ceilings and stuff if he really wants to. He's pretty creative about it but generally does prefer to use it combatively or just to get around.
• CORRUPTION. The "true form" of his ability allows him to "manipulate the gravitons in his surroundings". He basically kind of loses control and goes on a rampage, increasing his own density to insane levels and shooting out compressed gravity black hole attacks. This has to do with how he's housing "Arahabaki" and honestly he'd probably never use this in game since he can't actually control it and only ever willingly uses it in canon in conjunction with someone else who can nullify it once the need is over.
