[ As annoying as it always has been, this is the nearest thing to impossible that things have ever gotten close to. It has always pissed him off on multiple levels, but half of the reason Chuuya always ends up going along with the plans Dazai cooks up without hesitation has been the way they always work out. They might suck (a lot) for him at times, but they've never killed him and he doubts they're going to any time soon.
Not because he thinks there's any particular soft spot or attachment, mind, but Chuuya just doesn't think Dazai is ever actually going to discard an ace if he doesn't have a really good fucking reason to do so. Chuuya will attack Dazai and impede things that don't matter much and he'll bitch the whole time - but while he doesn't plan to ever say it aloud they both know that it's too easy for him to fall back into step with Dazai.
He's not used to them being on a losing side. It's happened fewer times than he can count on the fingers of one hand. It would figure that he's never gonna be able to properly enjoy Dazai getting frustrated and strung out about being outgunned because every time that happens it turns out to be at a time Chuuya didn't actually want it to happen and it fucks him over, too. Why couldn't Dazai have the decency to get beat during one of the times Chuuya's lot wasn't thrown in with his?
Ignoring the part where it's seven years past the first time he met Dazai and well past them being partners and he still always ends up right where he is.
They're too far away from Japan right now to do anything other than pass information, realistically speaking. The Port Mafia and Detective Agency that's actually still back in the thick of things can maybe do something with that information, but being in the wrong place after being played - at least it wasn't just him - is going to drive Chuuya up the wall even if he refuses to sit around entertaining worst end scenarios. ]
Okay, so what's the damn plan? [ He doesn't like the frantic look - can't enjoy it - and if there's one thing he'll trust in a crisis it's whatever dumb fuck thing Dazai's gonna say to him next. It's bitter irritation on his tongue, but the trust is still there even when he doesn't want it to be. ]
[The truth is that none of Dazai's plans always had a 100% success rate. There is always a chance of failure or absurdity, some kind of hapless last minute chance for him to die, but one thing he makes sure is that Chuuya never ends up dying as part of the consequences. It's not because of any kind of affection, mind you, he just simply refuses to die at the same time as Chuuya does. It would be simply horrible!
That being said, going against Fyodor has always been one of his more dangerous endeavors. This is of no exception, not with all the precautions and adjustments on the fly he must do in order to combat that demon. There's even a moment where he did worry that he might have lost Chuuya - again, definitely not for sentimental reasons, nuh uh - but somehow things managed to work out, and Dazai himself had the last laugh.
Except he didn't, and suddenly where they are becomes the safest place on earth - far away from Fyodor and Yokohama, and absolutely far away from the place he wanted to be. The demon slipping through his fingers, his plans falling into place like perfect puzzle blocks, and for the first time in a long while, Dazai feels genuine fear. He doesn't like it, the unsureness of it all, not when there is so much at stake and so much to lose, because even now he can predict what Fyodor is going to do.
How does any of that matter now though, when he is so far out of reach.]
We need to get there as soon as possible! [It's another absurd thought, when they are miles away and too late to influence anything, but sometimes even Dazai Osamu is stuck at his wits' end. The only thing he could do is put his faith on Atsushi and Akutagawa, to hope they do the very reason he wanted them to meet in the first place. And yet he still cannot sit idly by.
It's a clear testament that he's so out of his depth that he trips over his still-sprained foot, his rush ending him toppling straight to the ground.] Shit! [He yells out - expletives are rarely heard from his mouth, often thinking them as uncouth, but this time he can't help it.
And to top it all of, it's stinky stupid Chuuya who gets to watch him make a mess of himself. He's gonna laugh at him for this, definitely.
But on the other hand, at least it's stinky stupid Chuuya, who's known him since he was fifteen, who's seen him in more embarrassing positions than these, who unwillingly knows his expressions like the back of his hand.]
That's not an actual plan, that's just a - [ You know, frantic statement? Chuuya has more insults loaded for it but then Dazai is tripping all over himself like he's some sort of baby gazelle. Or giraffe. Something incredibly awkward and not graceful, anyway, and Chuuya does snort but he also reaches down to haul up on Dazai's collar. There's that familiar muting of Tainted Sorrow that he ignores because while he doubts they can get anywhere useful in a reasonable timeframe...
Well, Chuuya isn't the lazy one. He hates being at loose ends doing nothing. The nearest he gets us drinking, and that isn't exactly in the cards right now either.
Besides, he actually did recognize the way that stumble happened, and that's at least one thing to do to make him feel better about things. ]
You're such a waste of combat training. [ No gravity manipulation is needed to haul Dazai up, since...well, Chuuya's strength is hardly all gravity. ] If you break a leg I'm not carrying your ass anywhere.
[ Well, he probably would. But he would like to avoid it. ]
Nurse's station is thataway, right?
nvm i hate the holidays (spent the last few weeks catching up to everything)
[Really nails down the fact that he’s out of his depth here, isn’t it? It’s sounds as scary as the dread forming in Dazai’s pit, calculations in his head going awry. Tainted Sorrow’s contact and consequent fizzling is almost a calming balm to his worries, as unlikely as it sounds. It’s something familiar, an expected result, and that’s enough of a reminder that this world has yet to go entirely mad.
Chuuya’s silly chiding, too, is also familiar. He’s not as much of a deadweight as Chuuya would claim — it’s just that everyone else is a candle in the wind when it comes to Chuuya’s martial capabilities. He would loathe to admit it, but he really is the Port Mafia’s best combatant. It’s why he’s comfortable enough to fully lean his weight towards his companion; they wouldn’t topple over like this.]
Use your eyes, slug. Or are your contact lenses obscuring your vision that much? Yes, the nurse’s station is there.
[ Where is the joy in life if he can't rib Dazai for being worse at something than him? He's been the better combatant physically between the two of them since they met at fifteen, but it isn't like that doesn't balance on the scales with which of them is the better strategist. Not like Chuuya's going to admit to that in so many words, ever. In the same way Dazai isn't the total waste of combat training Chuuya's been saying he is since he joined the mafia, Chuuya's not half as stupid as Dazai likes to claim he is, but he's also been outmaneuvered way too many times to have illusions about who's ahead there.
Despite bitching about not carrying Dazai anywhere - undercut by hauling him upright - there's not even a second of hesitation needed to decide that being leaned on doesn't count. It's too familiar to shake off, anyway. Even hating Dazai's guts as kids his first instinct in combat was always to knock the other boy out of the way and adjust to keep him more or less intact; outside of it he still finds himself simply accepting the extra weight and shifting to play half a crutch for a second even as he glares up and to the side and starts leading the way. He refuses to think about how he doesn't have to think about matching Dazai's pace. ]
Use your eyes, I took 'em out when you were doing your dumbass melodramatic speech. [ Said like Chuuya doesn't also make melodramatic speeches sometimes? But he's of the opinion he isn't as bad as some people who often choose to make these speeches while he has to play defense, which is just annoying. He'd prefer some kind of different background noise to a fight or mission than Dazai's smug self-compliments. ] Speaking of melodramatic speeches, why do you always have to make it sound so ridiculous when I'm "betraying" you. I'm actually offended anyone ever buys your crap, like you aren't a bag of hot air literally every time -
[ Good times and fate his ass. He's annoyed it always sounds sincere even to him, because it does always sound absolutely ridiculous when looked at through the lens of knowing Dazai for nearly half the life he remembers. ]
